Next Steps

ODOT will continue work to finalize the report, with project partners working together to review and strategize regarding construction projects and funding sources to improve the corridor. In addition,
the City of Worthington will share and discuss the findings of the report with community shareholders.

The City of Worthington and partner entities City of Columbus, Perry Township, the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC), and ODOT have identified a shared goal for improvement of the State Route 161 (SR 161) corridor between Olentangy River Road and Sawmill Road.

ODOT agreed to work with the partner jurisdictions to administer a comprehensive evaluation of the corridor. The consulting firm of Mead and Hunt, along with subconsultants Burgess & Niple for traffic analysis, and Lawhon & Associates for public involvement and environmental analysis, has been hired to conduct the study, which was launched in summer 2016.  The purpose of the study is to develop a strategy for improvements that are constructable and fundable to reduce congestion and delay, improve safety and provide bikeway/pedestrian accommodations.

Public Input

An Advisory Committee comprised of members from each of the partner jurisdictions and representatives of neighborhood groups along the corridor met throughout the process to provide ideas and input. A public meeting was held June 6, 2017 to present alternative scenarios for improvements to the corridor. View Improvement Alternatives presented at June 6, 2017 Public Meeting

2014 MORPC Traffic Study

Previously, the Cities of Worthington and Columbus and Perry Township contracted with MORPC to conduct a traffic study of the corridor between Olentangy River Road and Sawmill Road. The study, completed in 2014, shows in order to improve traffic congestion along the corridor, the intersections of SR 161 at Linworth Road and Olentangy River Road must be improved.  In addition, the railroad crossing west of Linworth Road must be addressed. For more information view the MORPC 161 Traffic Study.
